1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order - they are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them. Then read Chapters 19 and 20 before touching a customer's windshield, because they are the assessment order and the eligibility decision, and together they are the trade.
2. Three stop-work items, answered in writing before any customer vehicle is touched: whether damage to a customer's vehicle in your care is covered; whether you are covered for a claim alleging your work was inappropriate or caused loss; and the driver-assistance position for the vehicle in front of you. Chapter 14.11.
3. On the first of those, ask two questions most technicians never ask: is damage to the WINDSHIELD ITSELF arising from my work covered, and is damage PROPAGATING DURING A REPAIR covered. A break running while you work on it is a known event and it is exactly where 'damage to the item being worked upon' exclusions bite. Chapter 14.4.
4. This book contains no limits. No repairable size, no edge distance, no critical vision area definition, no depth criteria, no cure times, temperatures, viscosities, pressures or shelf lives. Every one comes from the specific resin manufacturer, the specific equipment manufacturer, the applicable standard where you work, or the vehicle manufacturer. Chapter 20.2.
5. Never take a limit from an AI system. It answers with exactly the confidence of a correct answer, you are asking precisely because you have no basis to evaluate it, and - uniquely here - THE ACT IS IRREVERSIBLE, so a fabricated figure does not produce a repair that fails and gets redone but one that succeeds and cannot be undone. Chapter 37.3.
6. Resin injected into laminated glass and cured is a permanent constituent of that windshield. There is no solvent, no reversal and no second attempt at the same damage - which means the decision is made and recorded before the tool touches the glass. Chapter 5.1.
7. The discipline that makes Rule 1 work is small and not obvious: carry nothing to the vehicle but a torch and a card, so that when the answer is no there is nothing to abandon and no momentum to overcome. Chapter 5.3.
8. Assess in a fixed order - position, type, size, depth, age and condition, glass and vehicle condition - with POSITION FIRST, because it can end the assessment before anything else matters and because it is the criterion most likely to be weighed against size if size comes first. Chapter 19.2.
