How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 8 again before you sign anything. It is the only failure in this book that cannot be undone.
3. MEASURE YOUR NOISE FLOOR and write the figure down with the date, the method, the gain setting and what was switched off. Quote the working case, not the best case - a figure achieved with the heating off is not the figure your client receives in January.
4. USE SOMEBODY ELSE'S EARS quarterly. Send a raw passage to a person who has never been in your room and ask only: does anything sound wrong or distracting? You have adapted to your own room and are the one listener guaranteed to fail this test.
5. Treat a run of unexplained rejections as a room test, not a performance problem, until measurement says otherwise. Technical rejections are silent - nobody writes to say your noise floor failed, they open the next file.
6. Treat the room before the chain. Cover the hard surface facing you behind the microphone first; it is frequently free and it changes the file audibly. A sensitive microphone in an untreated room faithfully captures more of the problem.
7. NEVER PROCESS AT THE INPUT. No compression, no gating, no de-essing, no enhancement. A gate removes the beginnings of quiet words in a way you will not notice and a client will.
8. QUOTE IN TWO COMPONENTS, ALWAYS: a session fee for producing the file and a usage fee for the permission. Even when the usage fee is small. Even when the client has never been asked for one.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
