How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order - they are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them rather than repeating the reasoning. Then read Chapter 15 before you accept a single job, because that is where the three stop-work items are.
2. Three stop-work items, all answered in writing before job one: whether you may lawfully drive customers' vehicles for payment where you live; whether you are insured to do so in the course of a business; and whether that cover extends to damage to the vehicle in your custody and to what value. Chapter 15.10.
3. Ask the third question separately from the second. A driver can be genuinely insured for third-party liability and personally liable for every penny of damage to the vehicle they are holding, which is the gap people fall into. Chapter 15.4.
4. Ask your insurer explicitly what would invalidate cover. The answer frequently includes leaving keys in a vehicle, leaving it unlocked, driving something not roadworthy, and moving a vehicle without the owner's authority - which converts several chapters of this book from prudent practice into conditions of cover. Chapter 15.4.
5. The condition of a vehicle is whatever you recorded before you touched it. A mark on a car carries no date, so a dispute about when it appeared resolves on documents - and if the only document is the other party's, you lose while being entirely innocent. Chapter 5.2.
6. Walk eighteen fixed positions in the same order on every vehicle, including four at wheel-centre height or below and two forcing you to look at the roof. A natural walk-round covers the middle third of a car; the claims come from the top and the bottom. Chapter 18.3.
7. The walk's most important property is that it ends at position eighteen rather than when you feel finished - because 'when you feel finished' is a threshold that falls in the rain, in the dark, and as the job count climbs. Chapter 5.4.
8. Photograph to a predetermined schedule, not to feel thorough. Systematic coverage is what converts absence of evidence into evidence of absence; a set assembled from what caught your eye proves only that those things existed. Chapter 5.5.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
