How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 21 before you publish anything else, and Chapter 20 before you write another formula.
3. RUN THE HAND-CHECK: for every calculation, work out on paper what the correct output is for a specific input, WRITE THAT DOWN FIRST, then enter the input and compare. Do it under five inputs - an empty cell, text where a number belongs, a date in the other order, a negative value, and a second application - in every environment your listing claims.
4. The expected answer must exist before the formula runs. Once you have seen the output you cannot un-see it, and your independent judgement is gone.
5. Looking at a formula's result and judging it plausible is NOT checking it. It is being told the answer by the thing you are trying to check.
6. Asking an AI whether a formula is correct is not a check either. It will tell you what the formula does, not whether that is what you meant, and it has never run your file.
7. COUNT YOUR CALCULATIONS by opening the file and listing them, not from memory - including data validation rules, conditional formatting rules, named ranges and chart data ranges. Almost everybody who counts from memory is out by a third.
8. Set a calculation ceiling derived from how long one hand-check actually takes you, and treat it as a budget rather than a score. Chapter 10.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
