How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 6 again before you deliver anything. It is the rule whose failure reaches somebody who never hired you.
3. GROUP THE PRODUCT LIST INTO SETUPS ON PAPER BEFORE UNPACKING ANYTHING. This is the single highest-return action in the book and it costs nothing but a sort - one photographer's forty-four setups on a sixty-product batch would have been about six.
4. NEVER QUOTE FROM A PRODUCT COUNT. Ask for a list with product name, SKU, size, finish, shape, and whether each item stands or lies flat. Five columns, and most sellers already have four of them.
5. COUNT SETUPS ON EVERY BATCH and compute shots per setup. It takes a tally mark, it is the number this trade turns on, and nobody keeps it.
6. Identify from the list the products that genuinely need their own setup - reflective, transparent, very dark, very light, very large or very small, and anything requiring a lifestyle context - and price those separately, explaining why.
7. Price by SETUP BAND with a BATCH FEE covering intake, storage, packing and admin, and state images per product as a consequence. A ten-product and a sixty-product batch have nearly identical fixed costs.
8. Never price lifestyle imagery at the catalogue rate. Each lifestyle setup serves one or two products, and quoting them as one job is the most reliable way to turn a profitable batch into a loss.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
