How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 23 - the reply ledger - before publishing episode one. In a medium this blind, one person writing back is more information than a thousand downloads, and asking takes nine seconds an episode.
3. Write the ask as ONE SPECIFIC QUESTION, answerable in a single line, placed before your median listen-through minute. General invitations such as 'let me know what you think' and requests to 'rate and review' both underperform substantially.
4. Convert your listen-through percentage into a MINUTE. That figure decides where your ask, your sponsor read and any mention of your own work have to sit.
5. Complete a rights register row before every upload: music and which of three licence categories covers it, any clips, whether the guest release is signed, and any named third party. No row, no publish. Nothing in any hosting tool provides this step.
6. Ask your music licensor three separate questions in writing: does the licence cover commercial use; does it cover an episode containing PAID SPONSORSHIP; and does it cover clips and derivatives. These frequently have different answers, and checking only 'does this cover podcasts' is the specific mistake that catches people out. Using no music at all removes the category entirely.
7. Send the guest release with the booking confirmation, never after recording, and make sure it states that you may edit. A release requested afterwards is a negotiation with somebody who now knows what they said.
8. Multiply your true per-episode hours by fifty-two before promising weekly. Measure three episodes rather than estimating; the gap between estimate and actual is routinely three times, and editing alone runs two to three times what people expect.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
