How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:

1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 4 to 7 first, in order. Those are the four rules, and every chapter after them assumes them. Then read Chapter 19 before taking any booking involving medication, and Chapters 21 and 22 together.
2. Every departure is a decision about the next ten to twelve hours in a building with nobody in it. Perform a fixed nine-step leaving sequence that retraces your own route through the house, because a considerate thirty-minute visit adds several new objects and openings and then leaves for half a day. Chapter 4.
3. Leave more than one water source, in more than one room, in vessels that cannot be tipped, and physically nudge each one. A single bowl on a hard floor is one nudge away from thirteen hours without water. Chapter 4.3.
4. Push every internal door to confirm it latched and try every external door rather than pulling it. Closed and latched look identical from four feet away and behave completely differently over eleven hours.
5. Never leave without physically seeing the animal. An eaten bowl and a used tray are evidence that an animal was alive some hours ago, which is not the thing you were hired for. Chapter 6.4.
6. Give only medication that is on a written, owner-signed instruction, exactly as written. Never adjust, split, double, skip, improvise a method, or accept an instruction whose execution requires you to judge how the animal seems. Chapters 5 and 19.
7. Count the medication at intake and do the arithmetic aloud - doses required against tablets present - because running out on day nine with an unreachable owner is the commonest serious medication failure in this trade. Count again at every visit against the log. Chapter 19.4.
8. Log every dose including the ones you did not give. A log containing only successful doses says everything went perfectly, which is almost never true over eleven days, and the absences are what an owner takes to a vet. Chapter 5.5.
