How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:

1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 4 to 7 first, in order. Those are the four rules, and everything after them assumes them.
2. If you already do this work, write down everything you know about each client's preferences and mark each item: did they tell me this, or did I infer it? Whatever proportion you inferred is the proportion of your service that is currently your taste wearing their name.
3. Ask your insurer, in writing and first: am I covered if a product I purchased on a client's behalf causes harm - an allergic reaction, an injury, an unsuitable item for a child? It is the most important question in the book and the one nobody asks. Chapter 16.
4. Complete a full allergy and dietary requirement record before any shopping, including the client's position on precautionary 'may contain' warnings recorded verbatim. That question is the one that prevents the failure in the introduction. Chapter 20.
5. Photograph the whole label - ingredients, allergen information, and the small print - and send it before buying anything in a restricted category, including items already on the approved list, because manufacturers reformulate. Do not summarise and do not interpret. Section 20.3.
6. Never substitute in a restricted category, at any tier, for any reason - including a different size or variant of an approved product. A safe list is a list of specific products, not of brands. Sections 5.1 and 20.5.
7. If nobody entitled to decide can be reached, the item is not bought. There is no version of this with a caveat. Section 5.3.
8. Never accept 'you decide' as a brief. Narrow the question, ask about aversions before preferences, and bring back a shortlist - which gives the client the relief they wanted without transferring a decision that was never yours. Chapter 4.

Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
