How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 4 to 7 first, in order. Those are the four rules, and every chapter after them assumes them.
2. Never leave a restrained animal on the table. If you must move away, the animal comes off the loop first - not 'keep an eye on it'. This is first because, unlike a blade injury, it does not correlate with skill: it happens to experienced groomers on familiar animals in vans they know well, and requires only that you are somewhere else. Chapter 4.
3. Fit a secure floor-level enclosure before your first appointment, so that taking an animal off the loop is a ten-second action. Without one, the rule has nowhere to go and will not happen. Chapter 4.4.
4. Lay out the van so that every blade, comb, towel and product you use routinely is reachable from the table. Run a one-week audit: note every time you stepped away and what for, move that item, and repeat until the list is empty. Chapter 19.4.
5. Photograph the animal in a fixed set before the first blade, every appointment, including the regular you have groomed forty times - and write down, explicitly, which areas you cannot assess and why. Chapter 5.
6. Say the cannot-assess sentence aloud to the owner before you start a matted coat. It tells the truth about what you can know, warns them that findings are possible, and converts anything you later discover from an accusation into an expected finding. Chapter 5.5.
7. Complete the post-groom record before you open the van door. The before answers 'was it me?' and the after answers 'what did it look like when it left?' - either alone is half an answer. Chapter 5.4.
8. Stop the appointment when the animal stops coping, finish safely, and send it home unfinished. A half-groomed animal is a completed appointment. The standard is not a finish but that the animal arrived fine and goes home fine. Chapter 6.
