How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 19 - the pre-job walkaround - before the first paying job. Four minutes, with the customer, pointing at three things, photographing each close and wide, writing them down and sending the images before anything is unloaded. The sentence is: 'Before I start, I want to show you three things - because when I've finished, they're going to be the only things left to look at.'
3. Then read Chapters 6 and 15, on water and power, before buying a tank. Capacity is not an equipment specification - it is a booking rule, and it silently decides which customer types are available. An operator dependent on the customer's outside tap has excluded flats, offices, workplace car parks and commercial sites, which is exactly where multiple vehicles are parked together.
4. Read Chapter 22 before using a machine polisher on a customer's vehicle, and read its five refusals twice. Correction removes clearcoat permanently; that is the mechanism, not a side effect. Buy scrap panels and cause a strike-through deliberately before it happens on somebody's wing.
5. Build Resource 40 - the hours-by-grade table - from your own recorded jobs. Twenty gives indications, fifty gives a table. Do not import hours from a competitor's website or from an AI system; that is how the mispricing in this trade propagates.
6. Assign a five-zone condition grade, written down, BEFORE the price is calculated. Writing it afterwards means choosing a grade to justify a price already decided. Say it in four parts: grade, cause, normalisation, consequence.
7. If hours variance is consistently positive, re-grade ten past jobs from the photographs before adjusting the table. The grading is often what is soft, and adjusting the table masks it while leaving the cause untouched.
8. Ask for the next booking at every handover, immediately after the aftercare, with a specific date offered from a diary - and enter four columns (registration, last visit, next due, contact method) before driving away rather than that evening.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
