How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:

1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 19 - verification - before publishing a single listing. Verification means the contact details reach this business, by this method, on this date. It never means competence, qualifications, insurance or safety, and the wording on the page must say only what was actually done.
3. Then read Chapters 21 and 22, on reviews and moderation, before building a review feature. Reviews make you the host of third-party statements about identifiable businesses and people; moderating may change your position rather than protect it; and for many solo operators the correct answer is not to have reviews at all.
4. Calculate the maintenance ceiling at Resource 40 before deciding scope: measured minutes per verification, weighted by your own correction rate, multiplied through cycle length and realistic weekly hours. It determines the maximum sustainable database size and almost nobody calculates it until the database is already too large.
5. Build the first hundred listings by hand, telephone-verified at creation, and time every one. That figure governs scope, pricing and growth, and the exercise teaches which local sources are reliable and which have simply copied each other.
6. Action every removal request the same day, before any conversation about whether the business should want it removed. Roughly half then choose to stay with a correction instead, and the ones who leave do so without a grievance.
7. Put a visible correction link on every listing page rather than in a footer. Most of the anger a directory receives is manufactured by how hard it is to complain.
8. Build the monthly advertiser report in month two, when it reports almost nothing, and send it every month including the empty ones. Two of the three biggest renewal drivers - what changed on the listing, and when it was last checked - have nothing to do with results.

Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
