How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 4 to 7 first, in order. Those are the four rules, and everything after them assumes them. Then read Chapter 8, which is the posture the rest of the book is written from.
2. Before your next lesson, open the folder you teach from and start listing where each item came from. If you cannot say where it came from, it does not go back in. Section 5.2.
3. Write down what you do and do not repeat, and what goes in your lesson notes. Chapter 6 explains why this rule is specific to language teaching and stronger here than elsewhere.
4. If you teach children, establish a designated safeguarding contact and an escalation today. A private language teacher has no designated contact by default, and if the child is in another country their protection system is not yours. Section 25.4.
5. Time your next lesson with a stopwatch and write down how many minutes the student spoke. Section 19.1. It will surprise you more than anything else in the book.
6. Read your platform's terms - including minimum age, off-platform contact, and what happens if your account closes - and record the date. Section 12.6.
7. Call an insurer with the questions in Resource 9 before the first paid lesson, and ask specifically about cross-border teaching and about data you hold. Both are routinely missed.
8. Already teaching? Start with Chapter 5, then Chapter 19, then Chapter 28 - the folder you have never audited, the talking time you have never measured, and the half of your working hours you are not charging for.
