How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 4 to 7 first, in order. Those are the four rules, and everything after them assumes them.
2. Write the four rules somewhere you will see them before a booking. Every serious failure in this trade is one of the four being broken by somebody who thought they were being helpful.
3. Ask your insurer, in writing and first: am I covered while staying overnight in a property that is not mine, and am I covered for animals in my care? Those are the two questions nobody asks. Chapter 16.
4. Complete the pre-booking confirmation sheet before every booking. Nothing on it can be obtained after the client's car has gone, and if any line is unticked the booking does not start. Resource 26 and Chapter 32.
5. Take the arrival condition record every time - twenty minutes, room by room, with photographs. It decides every subsequent disagreement, and it is the reason a returning traveller noticing a mark is a conversation rather than a claim. Chapter 19.
6. Locate and physically operate the stopcock, the main switch and the gas valve at the handover. Not pointed at from a doorway. Turning a stopcock off is the single most valuable thing you will ever do in this trade. Chapter 19.
7. Get the veterinary authorisation signed before the client travels, with a spend limit, an escalation order, a confirmed billing arrangement, and an advance instruction for the case where a vet advises euthanasia and they cannot be reached. Have that conversation over a cup of tea, not with a vet at two in the morning. Chapter 21.
8. Ring the veterinary practice and the named emergency contact before the client leaves. A contact who has never heard your name is not a contact, and an escalation list nobody has verified is a list of assumptions. Chapters 21 and 25.
