How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:

1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 21 before you publish anything, and Chapter 19 before you draw another layout.
3. BUILD THE DATE SOURCE FIRST, before any layout. It must take a year, a week-start convention and a start month as inputs, produce day and month names from the same place as the dates, and handle month lengths by rule rather than a typed list. Test it by regenerating three consecutive years including a leap year.
4. The test for whether you have a source: change the year and regenerate. If any file needs a human to look at it and move something, that part is not a source and it will cost you most of a hand-rebuild.
5. COMPUTE YOUR CARRY-FORWARD RATE in February - the share of next season's catalogue you could produce by regenerating rather than rebuilding. Above ninety per cent is a rebuild that fits the trough; below fifty you are running a summer job and adding a product makes next August worse.
6. Count SOURCES and FILES as two separate numbers, on paper. Multiply layouts by pages per year by page sizes by orientations by week starts by colourways by formats by editions - almost everybody who estimates it mentally is out by a multiple rather than a percentage.
7. RUN THE PROBE SET BEFORE GENERATING THE CATALOGUE: every month's first day and last day, February specifically, both year boundaries, and one independently known date - all repeated with the week start flipped. About sixty checks, one hour, covering a whole year.
8. Check against an INDEPENDENT authoritative reference. Never a language model. Never another generated calendar built the same way, because both can be wrong together and the check passes.
