How this one is meant to be worked through, in the author's own words:
1. Read Chapters 5 to 8 first, in order. They are the four rules and every later chapter refers back to them.
2. Then read Chapter 21 before you publish anything, and Chapter 7 before you write another clause.
3. RUN THE ADAPTATION TEST: give your document and its guide to a real person who is not you, describe an awkward fictional business in five sentences, and ask them to make the document true about it. Count what they could not do. This is the only verification this trade permits.
4. Build fictional businesses that are awkward exactly where your document is comfortable - if it assumes a manager, the business has one person; if it assumes regular hours, the work is seasonal. Write three and rotate them.
5. Every descriptive or conditional statement must be one of: confirmable, changeable, choosable from supplied alternatives, safely deletable, or flaggable as something to check. Anything else is what gets issued unchanged.
6. MARK EVERYTHING. CHOOSE where there are alternatives, CHECK where it depends on their place or sector, KEEP where it is structural - and re-examine every KEEP, because most are CHOOSEs wearing a confident tone.
7. Supply alternatives IN THE FILE for every CHOOSE. A choice between one option and an instruction to write your own is not a choice anybody makes.
8. Make blanks conspicuous enough that a person would be embarrassed to circulate the document with one left in. A grey underline reads as a design element and gets ignored.
Written to be used rather than skimmed. Every financial figure is left blank on purpose, and anything touching law, tax, insurance or data protection is written as questions for a qualified professional rather than answers.
