1. Read the Introduction and Chapters 4 to 7 first, in order. Those are the four rules, and every chapter after them assumes them.
2. Book paediatric first aid before anything else, in person and practically assessed rather than online-only. It is the one qualification a parent actually asks about, and it is the one thing you cannot acquire on the night. Chapter 9.
3. Write the four rules somewhere you will see them before a booking. Every serious failure in this trade is one of the four being broken by somebody who thought they were being helpful.
4. Establish, from the body that sets the rule and before your first booking: the minimum age at which somebody may be left in charge of children, and the point at which paid childcare becomes registrable and what ratios apply. These are the questions people assume. Chapter 16.
5. Establish the local safeguarding route and the out-of-hours number, and confirm whether any reporting duty applies to you personally. A route you have to find at eleven at night is one you will not use. Chapter 7.
6. Ask your insurer, in writing, what is excluded - transporting children, taking them out of the house, overnight bookings, more children than agreed, and other people's homes. The exclusions are the document. Chapter 14.
7. Never give medication of any kind, including anything on the counter, anything a parent said was fine, and anything a child says they always have. Say it aloud at the door every time. Chapter 23.
8. Form no judgement about a child's health and express none. If you are unsure whether an injury or a symptom matters, that is a phone call, not a decision. Chapter 23.
